COME AUTUMN

 9 August 2025

Come autumn, come quickly

bring your red and yellow leaves

away summer sunshine

too hot

relentless light piercing

my eyes

come autumn shadows,

walk in front of me as you always do

twice taller than me.

bring your dark evenings

brambles, sharp and winding

blackberries and apples

falling leaves,

take away the roses, the lilies too

bring back the mistletoe

and naked trees

only one thing I might miss

-  the bumblebees.

Amen

the web

Under the chair

just there

a cobweb, already broken

Under the gothic stone

the sunlight penetrates and

just there  a dandelion spore

hangs on the web

just above the floor

flagstones worn,

before me the Divine Son

in a golden crown

Amen

vespers 7 august 2025

 softly comes the night

the end of  day

forward my soul take courage

He  is with you always

Take the terror from me O Lord

as Holy night darkens Your sky

Reveal Yourself My Lord

As the seagulls fly

seabound they swirl above my head

leaving me behind

night takes me near  the dead

Your breathe revives me

must I await the morning

until the light returns

or will You be near

as Holy fires burn.

Amen

REVERIE

 dreams bring revelation

from the depths of heaven or hell

fragments formed press forward

only now do they tell

comforting words

a kiss divine He holds my hand

leading me to His sweet embrace

O tell me Lord, O tell me

when will I see Your face?

Amen. copyright 2025

seagulls

 6 August 2025

i hear your cries of such dismay

your fleeting throats cry each day

I cannot see you but in my mind eye

i'll bring an image when I die

to heaven's gate and as I sigh

my foolish deeds, and unkind speech

and there by that blessed entrance reach

my Lord's sweet face and ask him why

heaven's birds must always sigh

in this broekn world's eternal sky.

so long ago

 6 august 2025

so long ago now it all began

so long since the nightingale sang

but

didI dream that mythic bird

which  in fact  I never heard

such sweet song the poet's say

I will hear it one summer's  day.

locked in a seascape now for 20 years

no songbirds meet my happy ears

but seagulls pass and screech their words

I understand so well these birds.

as their soar in brilliant skies\

I do not need to close my eyes

to imagine their flight

into every sunset's night.

Amen

I HAVE A COMPLAINT LORD

of all the wonders of summer

of sea and wind through leaves

of sun and shady trees

of dandelions and fine roses

of summer nights and sea breeze

of lavendar and bumblebees

i miss april showers and moody skies

snow and ice and winter fires

i miss the early days of spring

the willow with its yellow hue

the skies a paler blue

threatening storms

and frozen rain

will you let me stay my lord

so I can see all this again?
